Black Sludge is a held item with unique properties, providing a dual effect depending on the type of the Pokémon holding it. Specifically, it benefits Poison-type Pokémon by healing them, while having an adverse impact on non-Poison types. Understanding how to effectively utilize Black Sludge can be pivotal in battles, especially when strategizing around Poison-type Pokémon.

Benefits and Effects​

When equipped as a held item by a Poison-type Pokémon, Black Sludge restores 1/16 of the Pokémon's maximum HP at the end of each turn. This gradual healing can be crucial in enduring prolonged battles, especially for Pokémon that are designed to stall or outlast opponents.

Conversely, if a Pokémon that is not of the Poison type holds the Black Sludge, it will lose 1/8 of its maximum HP after every turn. This negative effect can be used strategically, for example, when battling certain opponents who might be inclined to steal held items.

Obtaining Black Sludge​

To acquire Black Sludge legitimately within the game, players must rely on specific Pokémon that have a chance to drop it upon defeat. The following is a list of Pokémon known to drop Black Sludge and their respective drop rates:

  • Grimer: A 2.5% chance to drop 1 Black Sludge.
  • Muk: A 5% chance to drop 1 Black Sludge.
  • Koffing: A 2.5% chance to drop 1 Black Sludge.
  • Weezing: A 5% chance to drop 1 Black Sludge.

Seeking out these Pokémon and defeating them will gradually increase your stockpile of Black Sludge, offering more opportunities to optimize your team's performance in battles.
